I'm Still Young!
TWO DAYS AGO
Deciding to buy some clothes for my distant nephew, I went to a store specializing in selling babystuff. I often go there, so the owner recognizes my face. As I was about to pay, she conversationally asked, "Just returned from campus, huh?"
I answered, "Oh, no. I've graduated years ago."
She raised her eyebrows. "Really? I thought you were still a university student..."
TODAY, 11 A.M.
"This is my daughter," my father told his personal banker at Bank Mandiri Prioritas. I shook the banker head, saying my name. And then the banker politely asked, "So where do you study?" Smiling, I told him that I already earned my bachelor degree, and now I'm working at home as freelance writer & translator.
TODAY, 1 P.M.
"Why are you buying so many clothes?" the salesperson asked. I was a bit annoyed... I mean, shouldn't she be delighted? I answered, "I bought some for my mother. As a thank you gift... well, sort of." She then made an assumption. "Oh, so after the tests you're going to return to your hometown?" Huh? What test? Then she told me that she thought I was still a schoolgirl.
When I was still single, it troubled me. I mean, I used to hate it when they considered me too young. (My teenage students used to question my age--they thought I was about their age) A kindergarten kid once tried to make a pass on me. *sigh* True, now that I'm married I still find it a bit irritating. Yet I also feel flattered...
