Tenth of November
My belated Nyai (my father's mother) was born on 10th of November. My mother and I talked about her a bit. I wish I knew her more. She passed away when I was barely 40 days old.
On this date I got a nice surprise from Iya. She came to my house with her husband and her beloved Ikel, and she brought me Sudirman's greatest hits cassettes! FYI Sudirman was one of the best entertainer in Malaysia. I grew up listening to his songs and watching his movie (I still remember a few scenes from his movie called "Kami", anybody willing to buy me the VCD/DVD? I'd be eternally grateful! Hehe!). My partner does not like his songs, though. Too mellow, he told me. It's true. Many of Bang Sudir's songs reflect the lives of commonfolk. Some of the hit songs tell various tales of common people--not being able to marry the girl of his dreams (not having enough money, not being in the same social circle), the joy of returning home for hari raya, an old bicycle as the most precious treasure--and many more.
I have to admit that I like Bang Sudir's songs because there are memories involved. Some of his songs helped me to be thankful for what I have. I understand why my partner complains so much if I listen to Bang Sudir's songs. If I grew up without Sudirman's songs, most likely I'd detest the them!
Well, anyway, but that was not the highlight of my day! I was so excited and ecstatic receiving an envelope from GPU. My second contract. I nearly wept in joy.
Call me sentimental. 'Cause I am.
