"Do you love your husband?" she asked.

"Why do you want to know?" I queried.

"Strange. Usually when I ask that kind of question, anybody'll answer, 'of course'."

"I am not 'anybody'."

"Why are you being so defensive?"

"Because to me, whether I love my partner or not has nothing to do whatsoever with you."

"But I want to know. I have a feeling that you don't, anyway. You seldom talk about your husband."

"Why should I talk about my partner in front of you?"

"To show that you care?"

"Then you are in error. If I want to praise my partner, to show that I love him, why should I do it in front of other people? Logically, I tell or show it to him."

"Well, other people are doing it. They tell the others how much they appreciate and love their spouses... how their spouses spoil and surprise them with little things that matter a lot..."

"Well. I'm not 'other people'. And to me, personally, it might sound like bragging."

"It's impossible to talk to you."

"Funny, I feel the same way too. Maybe we should end this conversation."

And I hung up.
